Monroe Community Church (MCC) is an emerging faith community whose mission is to "Love God, Love People, and Love the City". MCC has participated in every ArtPrize. Over that time, we have enjoyed hosting 3 jury finalists, the Contemporary Black artist award winner (2021), and the 3D Jury award winner (2022), Additionally, we were a finalist for Outstanding Venue in 2017, and WON the Outstanding Venue award (2022). Our renovated 1963 industrial building has been transformed into a state-of-the-art multi-purpose ministry center and has been equipped to display and illuminate art, a feature that has become part of MCC's core mission. The exposed steel structure is at 12'-2" above finish floor and is suitable for suspended work. The lobby, or "gallery" as we call it, has north natural light, white walls and ceiling, and polished concrete floors. The worship center has medium-gray walls and a black ceiling with medium gray carpet. Both are equipped with hanging rail systems and adjustable flood and spot lights.
Each year, our pastors and musicians create a 4-week series called "Meet the (a)Artist", where they craft worship services based on interviews with several of the artists we host and explore spiritual responses to the themes in their artwork. We have the rare benefit of free street parking nearby and would be an ideal launching point for art enthusiasts to start out at and then take the free DASH shuttle bus into downtown. We have a following of faithful ArtPrize goers, a team of skilled volunteers to help artists install work, a regular media presence each year, and are a destination for both school trips and retirement community excursions. MCC's ArtPrize team leader is an architect who can help artists illuminate and suspend complex work.

Meet the (a)Artist

a series of worship experiences that emerge from our venue’s artists and their work

Since the very first ArtPrize in 2009, Monroe Community Church has created worship experiences rooted in the felt needs, human conditions, pathos, and joy found in the art that we host. If we believe that humans are created in the image of God, then each of us testifies to the Creator by creating. Each Sunday morning during ArtPrize, our pastor and worship leader will interview the artist, who may or may not be a person of faith, unpack the motivations and meaning behind their ArtPrize entry, and then look to scripture and song for what the Bible and a rich musical tradition may say about similar themes.
