It's Not Easy Being Green
Today, after looking at all the exhibits about things you can do to care for the earth, Pastor Henry talked about why we should care about being green. In Genesis 1, God made the earth and told man to care for it, rule over it and subdue it. Some translations use the phrase "have dominion" instead of rule and it was interesting to find out that dominion in Hebrew actually means "higher on the root of a plant." If you have dominion over something, it means you better take good care of it because without it, you will die.Another HUGE reason why we should take care of the earth is to show love to our neighbors!
Pastor Henry then had a great interview with Steve Fridsma who is a fount of knowledge about ways to be green. Steve told us the problem is a spiritual one and I think this is true. He also said the more reading you do on the subject, the more you can feel like a hypocrite because there is always something more you can be doing. In caring for Creation, to keep things in perspective, we have to be remember that we're honoring the Creator and not worshiping creation.
God, brilliant Lord, yours is a household name. 2 Nursing infants gurgle choruses about you; toddlers shout the songs That drown out enemy talk, and silence atheist babble.
3 I look up at your macro-skies, dark and enormous, your handmade sky-jewelry, Moon and stars mounted in their settings. 4 Then I look at my micro-self and wonder, Why do you bother with us? Why take a second look our way? 5 Yet we've so narrowly missed being gods, bright with Eden's dawn light. 6 You put us in charge of your handcrafted world, repeated to us your Genesis-charge, 7 Made us lords of sheep and cattle, even animals out in the wild, 8 Birds flying and fish swimming, whales singing in the ocean deeps. 9 God, brilliant Lord, your name echoes around the world. Psalm 8, The Message

Jewel, I love the title of this blog. So true. But I think it's laziness on my part in not being green. I really appreciated all the suggestions that Steve has for being green. Isn't Psalm 8 great in the Message? I also appreciate all the work everyone is doing to make Riverfest fun, interesting and engaging. We have such gifted pastors. They are creative about how they bring God's word to us so that we can hear it clearly and in a relevant way. God is glorified.
True, Skip!
