Walking By Faith

Our God is an Awesome God
Today, Pastor Amy talked about the faith of Abraham as highlighted in Hebrews 11. This chapter illustrates so well what it means to "walk by faith." Abraham did what God wanted him to do by faith...even though... He walked in complete faith and put aside his own desires; he was willing to be uncomfortable to become the kind of person God could use.
Pastor Amy said that what we believe is best for us is not always the same as what God knows is best for us. We want what makes us warm and comfortable but God wants for us what will make us stretch and grow; what will make us into the best we can be for Him. I think it all comes down to trusting in God's goodness and that he has our best interests in mind, but this can be hard to do when we can't see it now.
Martin Luther King, Jr. said that faith is taking the first step even though you don't see the whole staircase, you just take the first step. How would you describe faith?
What can you learn about faith from a child? Hint: see the above picture :)

I completely agree that it is VERY difficult to let go and put your complete trust in God. I got to experience what that was like this past summer, being unemployed. Right away, I decided that this was part of God's plan for me. At the time I couldn't see what He had planned for me and honestly I still don't, but throughout the summer I felt a peace about me, I knew God had a plan for me. I have learned to trust in God and know that if I listen and obey, He will take care of me.
The trust and obedience that Abraham had is amazing to me, I can't imagine what I would do if God asked me to give up one of my children.
Well, Monday I start my new job. I can't wait to see what else God has planned for me.
Thanks for that great example, Dan. Hope your next step - tomorrow - goes well!
Thanks for the example Dan. It is fantastic to see that faith in you.
I personally came upon a meaning of faith by watching none other than a Billy Graham special on television. Rev. Graham said in essence:
If you are driving up a hill in your car, you would not stop the car at the top of the hill, get out, and look over the hill to make sure there are no cars coming in your lane. You simply drive over the hill, by faith.
This is the same way to me with God. Admittedly, I need to do better in trusting in Him without doubting.
It is unreal the feeling that is within me when I trust God. It is fantastic.

We had a great time explaining what Faith is to our kids at dinner last night. I grabbed a pen off the table, put it under my coat, and asked M if it was still there. Then I asked her how she knew. HJ wondered if he could 'peek.'
I wondered what 'peeks' we get- what glimpses of God there are throughout our day to remind us God is there.
Because of the various challenges I have faced in life, I have come to think of faith as being on a trail in the middle of the woods at night. It is so dark--not even the moon is visible. The only tool available is a tiny flashlight which gives off just enough light to take one simple step. Faith is taking that step and trusting that God is providing everything needed for that particular moment on the journey.
When talking about our need to listen to God with our kids, we asked our children why we need to listen to God. Our son replied, "Because if we don't listen, God will have to start over."
I wonder how many times God has had to "start over" with me. The word "lots" comes to mind. But, then I give thanks that HE is willing to start over again, and again, and again.
One of my favorite quotes about faith is this: "Faith is deliberate confidence in the character of God whose ways we may not understand at the time." Oswald Chambers
Wow Heather...
That's a great description of faith. It reminds me of the camping trip this summer, where we went walking in the dark (DARK dark) down trails.
Indeed, God provides everything needed for the journey.
Thanks again for the comment!
